I invite you to perform a forensic examination of a major media outlet’s current smear campaign disguised as news. Let us dissect the narrative which is designed to besmirch the President of the United States, and more importantly, sway public opinion of the president more negative. Remember timing is against the backdrop of Impeachment proceedings that polls poorly and a goal to hurt Trump.
Consider this an exercise in critical thinking. Consider it training in the detection of propaganda designed to create false opinion or an illusion that something is, that is not. There has never been a Marxist/Communist country to date that had free speech or an honest media. The anatomy of a smear requires some combination of these elements:
- False premise
- Deception, directly/or by omission
- Ad hominem attacks
- Straw man argument
- Usage of a false dichotomy
- Orchestration/coordination of repeating the falsehood until desired fruition.
The Article on the lab table today is from Politico dated 11/24/2019 and is written by Nancy Cook. The title reads: Forget the Oval. The real Trump action is in the residence. The objective of the smear is written directly under the headline title: Fixated on impeachment proceedings against him, Trump is increasingly taking his official business to the White House’s executive residence to escape perceived risks of hid formal office space.
Is Trump fixated on impeachment proceedings? The word fixated implies obsessed with someone or something to the exclusion of all others. A review of Trump’s schedule of events and actions exhibit a multitude of focus points from Medical billing and cost transparency, campaign rallies, drug pricing to meetings with world leaders, Veterans, Apple plant opening, and Pardons. From China’s trade deal, federal Judge nominations, Medal ceremonies, to honoring the fallen in a transfer ceremony, and that is just one-fourth of his schedule of activities over the last three weeks. One can only assume the writer determined that answering the press’s direct questions on impeachment or tweeting a response to those stating false things about him to the public is becoming “fixated.”
Further, suggesting the list above is not official business is absurd and he certainly did not do them in his executive residence. But it is the last few words in the paragraph which is the hook. The carefully chose word,” perceived ” is to promote there is something wrong with the way Trump thinks. And of course, the identified victim is in the word ” Risk”. This is not a vague reference and later on, in the article, the writer points to functions and or acts as the president that would be hidden from oversight and not logged or archived under the hypothesis that while a president is in the executive residence they somehow are no longer president.
Denote the beginning of this diatribe.
“The Oval Office is the traditional epicenter of power for American presidents, but a new one is emerging that’s more exclusive, more secluded and more convenient.”
Is there any evidence whatsoever in public view or in this article that supports Trump not utilizing the Oval as significant in his duties as President? I defy you to find any week ( when not on official vacation ) since elected, that the president has not taken meetings, pictures, calls, etc. inside the Oval. The public can C -Span search and find meetings with world leaders sitting in the oval with press rolling cameras and making statements and taking questions. This is not an example of an epicenter of power? Exclusive and secluded why? The fact that Trump’s 2019 White House Payroll has 418 employees and, that is 36 fewer staffers than Obama had at the same point in his term, is not exclusivity or seclusion it is cost-effective, cohesive, and leaner.
The president’s leadership model which does not include a slew of “Czars” has already saved the U.S. Taxpayer 20 million! Hey, maybe that is a story you may want to write Ms. Cook? And did you even read your article? Near the bottom, you even tell the reader that other presidents took calls in the evenings in the residence, and worked on official executive duties in the residence ‘s Treaty Room, but somehow Trump is upending normalcy and for a nefarious rationale. There is no one on the record in your article .” According to interviews with a half dozen current and former senior administration officials.” Smears depend on hearsay cloaked in anonymity.
Now, let us drill down specifics contained within the article.
“President Donald Trump is increasingly morphing the White House residence into a second Oval. It’s become the place where Trump feels most productive, where he avoids meddling by his staff and where he speed-dials his network of confidantes, GOP lawmakers, and TV pundits.”
How can you make the claim Trump is secluding himself to avoid oversight, yet also claim that he is watched to such the degree that you know who he is cloistered in secrecy engaged in conversations? ” TV Pundits ” is a necessary trigger word you included for maximum effect. The raw truth is you have no documentation to support who the leader of the free world is choosing to converse with unless officially released ….do you? You point out last week in specificity stating the president ” meets his personal attorneys to plot legal strategy, or campaign advisers to shape 2020 campaign moves. And last week it became the location for a Trump meeting that’s as official as any, hosting Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell.
I wonder if when Clinton, Bush, or Obama met with their attorneys you would have described that as Plotting? You claim Trump suffers from an omnipresent fear of leaks to the media. By now even drive-by-media in the bubble must know the same evidence we all do. That evidence being reported by all of you that the Trump White House is plagued by leakers and moles for intelligence agencies. Perhaps secluding your campaign strategies is a brilliant and necessary step. It took ten minutes searching the internet to find a list of different “as official as any “person meeting with former presidents in the residence, Ben Bernanke of the Federal Reserve being one of them.
It is tedious but let us plow on …
“Trump was especially proud to show off the Oval’s Resolute Desk — a prop he still uses for photo ops and official visitors. Over time, Trump increasingly ditched the formal office and inched closer to the residence”
Again, which president did not take photos with official visitors in the Oval? Did all of them use their desks as a prop? Again, C-Span, NYT, Cnn, and the rest, even your own outlet Politico, has Trump in the Oval Office several times a week consistently meeting world leaders, meeting visitors and taking photos, signing executive orders, and so forth. One can literally roll the tape and the dates. It is a complete falsehood to assert this president does not use the Oval, or the Cabinet Room, or the many other areas in the executive and White House for speeches and events. He just met with the president from Turkey in the Oval last week. This president has met with more world leaders at the White House than Obama in the same time frame. The list is long but just in 2019, it includes Turkey, Australia, India, Bahrain, Mongolia, Romania, Ireland, Lebanon, Columbia, Brazil, Canada, Egypt among many more. Do you suppose these meetings did not include the Oval? He has conducted ” official ” duties inside the Oval with cameras rolling which include trade delegations from China and 19 other countries this year alone.
His entire tenure Americans have seen him with dignitaries, freed hostages, Angel moms, Religious leaders, Black and Hispanic coalitions, Key corporate leaders, School shooting victims and advocates, Military veterans groups, Education coalition groups, Law enforcement groups, Governors, and so forth inside the Oval Office. This president has been more transparent with the American people by bringing the cameras right into the Oval and Cabinet room to watch the process and take questions and your thesis statement is he is hiding out and avoiding Oval? This man may go down in history as the hardest working president of all time, despite a fraction of the country who did not vote for him and do not approve of his policies.
As propaganda goes, this was my favorite in the entire piece.
“Outsiders can only reach Trump there through the telephone, or if he invites them in.”
Please, Ms. Cook, tell us what President of the United States in modern history can an” Outsider” just show up and have access to Potus without an invite and clearance? No matter in Oval, West Wing, residence or anywhere? And by “Outsider” I assume you mean other than family or those staff you could count on one hand( including secret service). No matter the name, all presidents are bound by design to have access strictly controlled on national security grounds alone. Guess what? The president actually does get to choose who he grants an audience and all presidents have done so.
This nugget speaks for itself and is dripping with contempt and entitlement. “The president sometimes prefers to interview candidates for high-profile positions from his private quarters, so staff and White House journalists cannot monitor comings and goings.”
Here again, many candidates for employment in the administration have been interviewed in Oval, on Trump Properties, and yes, some in the residence. So what? Is that actually unusual? Clinton interviewed FBI Director candidates inside the residence and Bush and Obama both did so out of the Oval as well on occasion
Another bite at the apple, Cook writes, “Early in this presidency, Trump’s staff tried to nudge him out into the city more often for dinners or to attend events, but the plans always fell apart, said one of the former senior administration officials who called Trump a “homebody.”
I will refrain from listing the pages of events the president has attended ( not just fundraisers or rallies ) over the last three years. I will stick with the last few months. Oddly, media is constantly gas-lighting the public with reports on Trump’s golf outings. Does he play those holes hold up in his residence? Trump has attended several sporting events, most recently the fights in NYC, the World Series, and the Alabama /LSU football game. The president has visited factories in 18 states in the last six months and most recently Ohio, Pa. and Tx. Over the last three months, he spoke at the International Association of Chiefs of Police Annual Conference and Exposition, Veterans Association event, and held pressers at border sites in Tx. Ca. and Az. There have been Rallies in LA, WI, KY, MI, MN.TX to name a few. He frequents his properties and socializes at the events there as well.
Context matters when wearing the mask of the reporter. The context behind why the President, First Lady, and Baron choose not to or attend the inside the beltway or Hollywood “events or honors”, should be self-evident. “The Resistance” is real, it is demonstratively dangerous and the Elite within The Resistance have no shame or respect for the Office of the Presidency. The Potus and his family’s safety is paramount and should never be placed at risk just so some arrogant clueless media type can feel he is more a social butterfly!
The article concludes by telling the viewer Trump does use the Oval and executive offices for approximately six hours a day and the remainder of his work elsewhere. Care to tell us the average time Obama did formal work in West Wing a day? Six hours? Hardly. Again, Trump works long hours every day and weekends even and sleeps very little. He has had this routine his entire adult life, absolutely no news there.
Finally, we get to the victim. The inference is the American people. What is he hiding floats in and out of the paragraphs.“Critics of Trump’s reliance on the residence as a place of business argue it can help to obscure official work and visitors. Calls he places or receives from landlines unless they are following national security protocols, goes out through the White House operator; only Trump and the operator generally know exactly who he has talked to in the last 24 hours. Trump also has long been known to rely on his cellphone for calls, avoiding the White House staff.”
Forgive the tone, When does the President of the United States ever get free from accountability to follow national security protocols? I mean you were cute by half on that one Ms. Cook. Wait a second there was that time Obama used an alias on an email chain that was outside the official government server in exchanges with Hillary Clinton on her home-brewed server … is that what you fear Trump may be doing? Are you under the delusion that the White House operator to the President is not on the NSA umbrella? Seriously, the media is lucky the” useful idiots” know no better.
Unfortunately, smears usually are effective. Media, who washed their integrity down the drain years back, who amplifies narrative pile- on, count on the ploy to work. Those who already bought the propaganda themes against this president will just use this smear to expand affirmation. The hope by the masters of the media complex is to beat down those who are not locked down as base supporters to the president. Wear them out so to speak with manufactured chaos they attach falsely to Trump and shameful fabrications as well. This is not the only smear campaign article and it will not be the last. Factually, media coverage of Trump since elected falls in the 92% – 96% range and he still is higher on daily tracking polls than Obama was at this time in his presidency.
This is part of why they smear so viciously now and it is all they have left. If they ever honestly just cover what his formal actions are as president and the results he would be in high fifties low sixties in polling. The SMEAR complex is in the poll suppression game. Once you recognize the con all future tries become transparent. This is what being an American and truly ” woke” should mean.
I hope this was helpful and allows you to start identifying how the media smears all things Trump, all persons connected as well, with impunity.
