On December 7th, the Daily Mail did a story on John Goodman’s weight loss. The opening photograph was an after-and-before image of the 69-year-old actor. The before photo showed a clearly obese Goodman, and the after image was him much thinner. His transformation is not flattering—he’s craggy, saggy, and sunken. What is puzzling are the readers’ comments. They use superlatives—“fantastic,” “terrific,” and “fabulous.”
It is emblematic of an era when citizens who do routine things are considered heroes, children are taught they can be anything they want to be, and boys are applauded for converting to girls or vice versa.
Goodman has been quite honest in revealing he had a significant alcoholic issue and his weight had ballooned to over 400 pounds before he stopped drinking and committed to a Mediterranean-style diet. Signifying kudos to Goodman for his healthy choice to lose weight is different than hyping his looks as a measure of increased attractiveness.
Time for some honesty here. Goodman lost a lot of weight but don’t lie to him and tell him he looks good.
