Is The Fried Chicken Sandwich, The New Hamburger?

Go to most fast-food restaurant websites and discover how prominent the fried chicken sandwich is—seems it’s overtaking the burger.

Nearly three years ago, a chain chicken outlet, Popeyes, put a fried chicken sandwich on their menu. It became so popular that lines formed outside their stores and a Maryland man was stabbed to death when he cut in front of other customers who were awaiting the Classic Chicken Sandwich. Today, nearly every place one can drive through and pick up food has a version of the fried chicken sandwich highlighted among their offerings.

The standard recipe for the fried chicken sandwich is a breaded and fried piece of breast meat, a brioche bun, mayonnaise or a mayonnaise-based sauce, lettuce, and dill pickles.

The following are the most popular fried chicken sandwiches sold in America. Pictures are taken from the restaurant websites:

Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich: No lettuce, looks dull, but it’s the best-selling chicken sandwich in America.

Popeyes Classic Chicken Sandwich: The trend-starter.

McDonald’s Crispy Chicken Sandwich: For breakfast, the chicken comes on a biscuit.

Wendy’s Classic Chicken Sandwich: There are 14 versions of the chicken sandwich on the Wendy’s menu including Spicy Asiago Ranch Club.

Burger King Chick’N Crisp: Distinguished by the sesame seed bun.

KFC: Of course, America’s premier fried chicken restaurant has to have a fried chicken sandwich.

Zaxby’s: Locations concentrated in the Southern states but may be worth the drive from other places.

If television commercials are any measure of what the most sought-after sandwich in America is today, it’s the fried chicken sandwich, not the burger.

  1. After writing this article yesterday, I went to KFC and bought 2 fried chicken sandwiches. I got the spicy version. The chicken’s the same; it’s the sauce that makes it spicy.

  2. Suddenly I feel hungry.
Chick-fil-a has no lettuce? The Wendy’s one looks best.
Better get em now before we end up like Venezuela.

  3. OMG! I am craving a chicken sandwich asap, lol. My mouth is all ready for a Chick-fil-A but it is Sunday and they are closed on Sundays – Grrrrrrr.
So Wendy’s it shall be, but I am asking the author, O’ Connor , to burn off the calories for me on his bike!
    Loved the article !

  4. I don’t shine anybody’s shoes so cfl is out & I don’t eat at the rest of the dumps mentioned & if you ever worked at any of them neither would you. So no, the chicken sandwich isn’t the new hamburger .
