Chart of the Day: Americans are Fleeing Public Schools

In reality, education is changing dramatically in America – Americans are fleeing public schools.

The pandemic has supercharged a trend that has plagued districts across the US for years – students are fleeing public schools. This is important because public schools lose funding as they lose students, and some schools have been forced to shutter altogether. Here are a couple of anecdotal pieces of evidence of the trend.

  • “The school board in Jefferson County, Colo., outside Denver, voted in November to close 16 schools. St. Paul, Minn., last summer closed five schools. The Oakland, Calif., school board last February voted to close seven schools after years of declining enrollment and financial strife.”
  • According to a fiscal watchdog funded by the city, enrollment in New York City’s public schools, the country’s largest school district, dropped by 8.3% from 2020 to 2022.

Public schools lost more than a million students from fall 2019 to fall 2020, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Enrollment fell from 50.8 million to 49.4 million. See below in the chart the enrollment trend by state and learn more here.

As a result, private schools and charter schools gained students. The number of homeschooled students doubled to about 5 million.

Recent polling results suggest that enrollment gains during the school year 2021 were indicative of a larger trend and that private schools gained students between the end of the 2020–21 academic year and the start of 2021–22.

See this in the chart below and learn more here.

Change in Private School EnrollmentThe question turns to why. Here are a few reasons – perhaps you can think of more.

  • During Covid, many schools had heavy restrictions and dramatically started this trend. However, most Covid restrictions are over, and yet the trend continues.
  • Crime in the inner cities has caused the learning environment to be problematic – causing many to flee these public schools.
  • Wokeism (e.g., CRT and what many feel are inappropriate sex education agendas) has infiltrated many school systems, and many parents are fleeing its indoctrination.

Gives in the comment section below any additional evidence you may have of this trend.

  1. Anyone who cares about their child will protect them from the evil madness of the public indoctrination centers.

There is NO reason for a teacher to discuss their personal sexual degeneracy or display tranny flags except explicitly to groom the innocent child into a sexual target for pedos.

There is no justification to willingly destroy your child by sending them to marxist/satanic indoctrination centers. That is what they are now.

  2. looking at one years data can give readers a misleading picture when making judgements about trends. IF we take a longer time periods we tend to get a more meaningful picuture.
According to the National Centre for Educational Statistics
“Total enrollment for public elementary and secondary schools was 47.2 million students in fall 2000, then 49.5 million students in fall 2010, and 49.4 million students in fall 2020”

ie a slight increase over a 20 year period. Now that is not to say that wasn’t a 2% drop from 2019 to 2020. (hardly a fleeing!!)
So where did those students go? Well Tom speculates that COVID related factors may have been at play and he may well be right. But that doesn’t account for demographic changes which may also have been a contributor. One of the main factors however that seems to be plaguing secondary schools across the globe is the acute labour shortage. Employers desperately try to entice young men and women out of school, offering them lucrative rates of pay often well above min pay rates that used to be the norm.

  3. One knows it is a trend when even pprogressive news calls it one – lol.
Oh , and never seek facts about homeschooling from the National Centre for Educational Statistics. All you will get is propaganda and skewed stats. This is war you see, and the public school unions who funnel stats to the above source have a vested interest to lie.

Homeschooling numbers are still significantly above pre-pandemic levels, according to data obtained and analyzed by The Associated Press. In 18 states that shared data through the current school year, the number of homeschooling students increased by 63% in the 2020-2021 school year, then fell by only 17% in the 2021-2022 school year.

The proportion of American families home-schooling at least one child grew from 5.4% in spring 2020 to 11.1% in fall 2021, according to a U.S. Census Bureau analysis.
